Freshman students who come to Hofstra are normally pretty nervous. Living in a new place with people that you don’t know can be difficult. However, freshman dorming know as the Netherlands, are a fun and active place for new students to live and adapt to their new community. The Netherlands which is only for freshmand students offer a fun community for students to study in and adapt to their new way of life. Each building consists of sutie style living that includes 4 person to each suite consistng of two bedrooms and one bathroom. A student gives us a tour of his dorm in this video. Students also have an easier time making new friends in the Netherlands because of the close living quarters and the ice breaker games that they make you play when you move in. Take a look at some students relaxing in between classes by playing some video games in this short clip.

Overall the Netherlands are a great place to live and really has welcomed the new Hofstra freshman to the community and hopefully people will continue to love the Netherlands as much as this year’s freshman did.

My task to investigate the daily happenings of the Hofstra University Student Center provided me with a surprising amount of information.

From 11:15 to 12:00, the Student Center is not exactly at the height of activity. A few isolated groups of students rifled through, intent on getting their next classes, and a few others stopped through the cafeteria for a bite to eat, but apart from that it was a very tranquil and passive environment. What made the entire report interesting, however, were the various activist and advocacy groups throughout campus who set up tables and booths, providing information to passing students.

Some simply advertised for upcoming events at Hofstra, like the “Urban Jungle” fashion show. Others still were nation-wide advocacy organizations like Pride for Youth, promoting interest in their group’s activities. The majority of them, however, were volunteer groups spreading awareness of various social issues and human issues; two groups I spoke to discussed their efforts to prevent the spread of the HIV virus, either by aiding those diagnosed with the disease or providing free testing for virus.

Though my camera’s phone did not provide the highest quality video of these events, it captured the passion of the individuals who occupy the Student Center for hours at a time, supporting good causes and adding to the atmosphere of a day in the life at Hofstra.

Mobile Journalism Essay

11/23/2009

For our Mobile Reporting project, “The Day in a Life of Hofstra,” each student had to go around finding out information about Hofstra’s facilities raging from Library, Admissions, and the on campus hair salon.

I was assigned to cover the HX Salon. Eager after being assigned, I went after class on Monday to the salon hoping to get approval from the owner to shoot video, record audio, and take photographs. However, the owner was not there, so I made sure to be back on Wednesday to follow up.

I came in again on Wednesday to speak the owner. I explained how what I shot would be uploaded straight from my phone to Tumblr. Vinny, the owner was not only more than happy to help me out, but flattered that his salon was thought of for our project. He even made an appointment for me on Friday!

On Friday, I had my phone ready to start my Mobile Reporting. I audio recorded the receptionist and took photographs. I also shot video of the hairdressers blowing hair out, washing and trimming as well. Overall, the experience was interesting and fun. I never realized how much I can really do with my phone.

Assignment 12

By: Ariel Gaworecki (agaworecki@yahoo.com)

This Friday in class we all split up and did separate news reports on different parts of the campus. Hofstra has tons of things going on at all times and our class wanted to show the world through the outlet of Tumblr what is it like to be a Hofstra student during the day. The idea was to only use our phones to do our reporting. We learned different ways to send media with our phones and have it posted on our Tumblr sites. This made it easy to do a live news report because all of the pictures, videos and voice over’s could be sent in seconds and posted online in no time.

My personal assignment was to cover the Admissions building on campus and to post what I shot on my Blog on Tumblr. I interviewed a few students and took a bunch of pictures to show what the outside of the building looks like as a student walks by it each day. Most of the students didn’t seem to notice the admissions building so I found different ways to make it seem interesting by taking pictures from interesting angles to make my report as informative as possible. The project was fun and very educational because I learned a lot about using my cell phone as a journalist.

to report on student health and how it has been affected in light of the H1N1 virus.

Using my enV Touch, I live-tweeted all of my observations for an hour. After speaking with the receptionist, I was able to sit down with Maureen Houck, director of the Center, who reluctantly let me text about the availability of “swine flu” vaccinations on campus.

I say reluctantly because she was very concerned about keeping patient records confidential, and having a journalism student snooping around must have made her a little defensive.

She clearly didn’t want me loitering around any longer than I needed to — immediately after she answered a question, she would prompt me to move on. As soon as I ran out of questions, I was shown the door.

When I explained how I was doing this as an exercise in mobile reporting, both Houck and the receptionist looked really confused. Not to sound ageist, but I’ve found that most adults take offense when someone is texting during a conversation.

So I took a little flak from my sources, but at least I got the information that I needed.

On an average day at Hofstra, finding a parking spot is not a simple task. Unless one arrives before nine o’clock in the morning, a spot on the south side of campus probably will not be found. If there are no spots available on the south campus, a driver must venture over to the north campus and walk all the way back over to the south side.

Students like Courtney Henley and Patrick O’Brien bemoan their experiences in parking at Hofstra. Courtney Henley discusses her difficulty finding a spot during the morning hours, and how people tend to dangerously “fly” over the speed bumps. Patrick O’Brien mentions the same problems as Courtney, and says that his parking experiences on a daily basis are “not fun”.

Reporting on the Hofstra University Public Safety service at 11:00 in the morning wasn’t exactly the most exciting assignment in the world. Nothing but the most basic patrols were going on, since it was a very uneventful time of day. Still, I got pictures of the Public Safety Center, and a safety officer on duty in the parking lot by the Admission Center.

As I said while blogging, a better time to cover this particular group would have been 11:00 at night, when Public Safety would be responding to calls about drunk students and the like.

Here on my blog you can see the pictures of the Public Safety Office and the officer standing on duty.

Already, the mobile phone is becoming an important tool in news gathering.

I wanted my young class of student journalists to learn that their phones could be a useful conduit for reportage, and that was the key and a point I drove home in lectures and in a memo I sent to the first class participating in the project. It was also backed up by a great comment from a reader, who happens to be a mobile journalism professional.

The setup was simple. Each student established an account on Tumblr.com. The microblogging service is simple to use and has lots of goodies for mobile applications – such as Dial2do, which allows you to essentailly turn a voice message into text, as well as an e-mail address that you put into your contacts to automatically post to the tumblr.

The students had a variety of mobile phones, ranging from flip phones to iPhones. But, with the new applications, the students could see that each phone was capable of multiformat functions. Some could send pictures and video, some could tweet via text. Their job was to do as well as they could with what they had at hand.

The students were asked to practice using their devices to post to Tumblr prior to the exercise.

The exercise was conducted on the campus. Each student selected a spot they were to report from during the first 45 minutes of the class — parking lots, the gym, the dorms, the student center, public safety. They were given the freedom to do as they saw fit and to post to their tumblrs. Then they were asked to return to the class.

I also set up a class tumblr (journalismtools.tumblr.com) where I could aggregate the individual postings into one site, selecting a theme that displayed more than one element at a time. While the students were out, I was on my desktop, reblogging their posts into the aggregate site. Tumblr lets you invite other tumblrs into the site and then repost their work.

Some came back and had to find alternate methods of posting video as the files were too large for their onboard systems. Some had to repost from home, after finding their USB cords to do the transfer from the phone to PC to Tumblr. Many found it useful to post their videos to YouTube and then embed them on their tumblrs.

The final portion of the assignment was textual. The students had to caption each of their postings and then create a meta article that described what they did and linked to the elements they posted.

Will post student comment on the exercise after the completion of the second class project on Monday.

Posted via web from krochmal’s posterous | Comment »

Listen To The Social Media Buzz With 38 Free Tools! | Penn Olson

Listen To The Social Media Buzz With 38 Free Tools! | Penn Olson

Building a Breaking Community News website with Twitter Lists

Building a Breaking Community News website with Twitter Lists

Show, Don't Tell

Show, Don't Tell:
Applied to fiction, goes for non-fiction too.
